Regular cleaning not only prevents potential damage but also ensures you can wear your earrings anytime without concern for their condition. Note that there is more than one way to clean these metals and stones, but these home earring cleaning methods are the ones we recommend for the best results. How to Clean Diamond Earrings

Diamond resists scratches better than any other gem, but it is susceptible to damage from physical blows. Keep it simple by gently washing with a solution of lukewarm water and soft soap, avoiding any scrubbing. You may use an ultrasonic cleaner or steamer to clean your diamond earrings but be sure to examine the stones beforehand. If you notice any feathers, fractures, or inclusions, bring the item in for expert cleaning and inspection.

How to Clean Sterling Silver Earrings

Sterling silver tends to tarnish, so you must adapt your earring cleaning approach based on the severity of discoloration. The first remedy is for sterling silver earrings that are slightly to mildly lackluster. Combine lukewarm water and soft, unscented soap then let the earrings soak in the mixture for a few minutes. Be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry after cleaning and follow up with a gentle buff using a silver polishing cloth. If the metal is highly tarnished, bring the earrings into our store for cleaning by an expert jeweler.

How to Clean Gold Earrings

The best way to clean gold earrings at home is by using a combination of lukewarm water and soft, fragrance-free soap. Add a few drops of the soap to a bowl of lukewarm water then gently rest the earrings in the soapy water for a few minutes. Rinse the earrings thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Gold boasts high corrosion resistance, so you can confidently use mild cleaning solutions and brushes without risk of damage. After cleaning your gold earrings, give them a little extra shine with a polishing cloth by simply rubbing the cloth over the surface in a circular motion until they regain their luster. And, ta-da, the process is complete.

FAQs

Should I Clean New Earrings Before Wearing Them?

Yes. It’s always wise to clean new earrings before wearing them for the first time. Despite being brand new, earrings can collect dust, debris, or residues from manufacturing. Cleaning helps remove any potential irritants and improves overall appearance, allowing you to enjoy your new accessory to the fullest from the very start.

Can I Clean My Earrings with Hydrogen Peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful disinfectant and can be an effective option for sanitizing your earrings. However, it should only be applied to the metal parts. Gemstones should never come into contact with hydrogen peroxide because it can damage their internal structure. Use this compound sparingly with sterling silver, as it can react with certain chemicals, and prolonged exposure may cause dulling. Also, exercise caution with gold, especially in higher karats. To clean your earrings with hydrogen peroxide, bathe them in a diluted solution of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water for a few minutesAfterward, thoroughly rinse and dry them with a soft cloth to remove any lingering moisture.

How Often Should I Clean My Earrings?

While you can clean your earrings at home, it’s a good idea to bring them in for professional cleaning every six months. We offer complimentary cleaning for all jewelry, regardless of where it was purchased. Not only will our in-house jewelers clean your earrings, but they will also inspect for any damage that may have occurred since your last inspection.

As an extra layer of security, we recommend insuring your earrings to protect them from potential loss or damage. With proper maintenance and care, your pieces can continue to look as new and invigorated as the day you first wore them.

An earring is a sophisticated creation; its components are largely determined by its style. A classic stud earring consists of a centerpiece, setting, backing, and post. The centerpiece is any gemstone, metal, or decorative element. The setting is the framework that grips the centerpiece. A few common earring settings are basket, bezel, and martini. The backing keeps the earring fixed to the ear. Earring backings are available in a variety of styles, such as butterfly and screw backs. The post is the mechanism by which the earrings are attached to the earlobe. In a stud earring, a post is inserted through the earlobe and fastened with a backing. The characteristic design of a hoop earring features a frame, closure mechanism, and possible ornamental detail. The frame is the central part of the earring that forms the visible loop that defines the earring’s shape and style. The closure mechanism for a hoop earring is typically a clasp, though it may vary. The inserted portion of a dangle and drop earring is often a hook that lacks a backing but allows for dynamic movement. Consider adding stoppers to the ends or gently reshaping the hook into a tighter curve for more stability.

When selecting and wearing your earrings, it’s important to adhere to these best practices. Choose high-quality materials. They are less likely to cause skin reactions and offer greater durability in the long run. Make sure your earring backings or clasps are secure to prevent accidental loss, and regularly check them—especially studs—to ensure they fit snugly and won’t slip off. Avoid exposing your earrings to harsh chemicals, such as perfumes, hairsprays, and household cleaners. These substances can harm metals and gemstones over time. Remember the principle: “last on, first off.” Consider rotating your collection of earrings regularly to give each pair a break from constant wear. This practice can help minimize wear and tear and extend the lifespan of your earrings.

Your jewelry expert will guide you on how to take off earrings that you are interested in or plan to purchase. If you ever find yourself in a predicament where you need to know how to get a stuck earring back off, please visit our store for assistance.

How to Store Earrings

The way you store your earrings—particularly gemstone earringsplays a crucial role in maintaining their condition. Instead of tossing them into a jewelry box where they can scratch against one another, opt for a dedicated earring organizer. Keeping your earrings separated will help preserve their finish and prevent irreversible damage.

How to Pack Earrings for Travel

When traveling with your earrings, utilize a dedicated travel case or pouch designed specifically for jewelry. Look for options with compartments to keep your earrings separated, which saves time and frustration while you’re on the go. Whenever possible, stow your earrings in your carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage. This extra precaution helps avoid the risk of losing them during transit. If you anticipate needing your earrings soon after arrival, place them at the top of your bag or in an easily accessible pocket. This way, you can retrieve them quickly and get ready without having to dig through your entire luggage.

How to Clean Earrings

Your earrings will inevitably accumulate residue. We recommend bringing your earrings to Borsheims every 6 months for professional cleaning and inspection. During this visit, an in-house jeweler will conduct a thorough cleaning and assess your earrings for any signs of damage, loose stones, or worn components, suggesting any necessary repairs or maintenance

FAQs

Can You Sleep with Earrings In?

While it may seem convenient to keep your earrings in overnight, doing so can pose several risks. It can cause irritation to the earlobe, especially if you move during the night. This can lead to soreness and, in some cases, allergic reactions. Similarly, sleeping with your earrings in can trap dirt and bacteria against the skin, increasing the risk of infection. Earrings, particularly those with delicate designs, are at risk of bending or breaking while you sleep. Constant pressure against a pillow can weaken the earring’s structure and lead to unrepairable damage. Most unfortunate of all, they could become loose and fall out without you noticing, resulting in a lost pair or incomplete set. So, for overall comfort and safety, don’t sleep with your earrings in.

Can You Wear Earrings in a Passport Photo?

Yes, as long as your chosen accessories do not obstruct your ears or any part of your face, your photo should be acceptable.

Earring care brings with it a lifetime of value. Never hesitate to bring your earrings into our store for complimentary cleaning and inspection. A little attention goes a long way.

Organizing a diverse and extensive collection of earrings can be quite challenging. Earring storage is not a onesizefitsall remedy; each type of earring has its own unique requirements. Read on to discover numerous earring storage methods that will help you efficiently keep your collection organized and safe.

Earring Catch All Tray

An earring catch all tray might seem like a quick and easy solution for storing your earrings, but generally we do not recommend it. These trays normally feature an open design where you can casually place your earrings, which can lead to several issues over time. One major drawback is the lack of organization. Without dedicated compartments or slots, earrings can become easily mixed up, making it difficult to find matching pairs. This disorganization not only wastes time but also increases the risk of loss. Additionally, the open nature of an earring dish offers limited protection against environmental factors, which can tarnish your jewelry over time. The potential for scratching is another concern. As earrings are tossed together in the tray, they can rub against each other, leading to scratches, especially on delicate metals or gemstones. On top of that, the absence of padding means that even a slight jostle can result in dents or other damage. Adding in other pieces like necklaces and bracelets can also make things tricky, often resulting in a tangled-up mess of your jewelry. While an earring tray might lend short-term convenience, it falls short in providing long-term protection and organization. If you want to maintain the quality of your earrings, it’s worth considering more structured storage solutions.

Hanging Earring Storage

Hanging earring storage is an accessible, space-saving option for displaying and storing your earring collection. It is particularly well-suited for earring styles such as hoop and dangle and drop. These organizers typically consist of a series of hooks, holes, or slots on a flat or mesh surface. They come in a variety of designs, including wallmounted, overthedoor, or freestanding. A wallmounted jewelry organizer keeps your earrings neatly arranged while doubling as decor. An overthedoor jewelry organizer is perfect for those short on wall space, providing an unobtrusive way to store your earrings. Freestanding earring holders can be placed on dressers or vanity tables, making them ideal for those who prefer a portable and flexible storage solution. Earring hanging organizers are not only practical but also help you keep track of your collection, ensuring that pairs stay together and are visible at a glance.

Earring Storage Box

Overall, we recommend an earring storage box to preserve your earrings. Unlike other storage methods, an earring box comes with various compartments and sections specifically designed to accommodate different types of earrings—be it stud, hoop, or dangle and drop. This design ensures that each pair of earrings has its designated spot, preventing tangling, scratching, and potential loss. Look for earring cases with soft, padded interiors to protect your pieces from scratches. The enclosed framework of an earring organizer box presents enhanced protection from dust and moisture. Frequent travelers can safeguard their earrings on the go with portable earring travel cases. These boxes are also incredibly user-friendly. The compact and organized layout allows for easy access and quick visual inventory of your collection, streamlining your daily jewelry selection process.

Cleaning gemstones demands a bit more tact compared other materials. Our A-Z guide for at-home gemstone jewelry cleaning outlines our preferred methods for cleaning common gemstones. While we recommend professional cleaning, these alternatives can serve in a pinch.

It’s acceptable to clean the following gemstones at home using a solution of lukewarm water and soft, unscented soap (refer to each gemstone for greater instructions and warnings) followed by a soft cloth for drying. If ever in doubt, leave your gemstone jewelry with us for cleaning by an on-site, GIA-certified jeweler.

Amethyst

Amethyst is a quartz variety that can crack as well as fade if exposed to high temperatures and intense light for extended periods. Avoid thermal shock and use caution if cleaning with an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and/or jewelry steam cleaner.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine, a blue variety of the mineral beryl, may receive heat, irradiation, and fracture filling treatments. Keep heat exposure at a minimum to prevent color fading and forget ultrasonic cleaners and steamers especially if liquid inclusions or feathers are present.

Citrine

Natural citrine is extremely rare so most citrine on the market originates from the heat treatment of amethyst. That said, it shares many chemical properties similar to amethyst, including a tendency to fade under high heat. Use caution if you decide to utilize an ultrasonic cleaner and/or steamer.

Diamond

Diamond resists scratches better than any other gem, but it is susceptible to damage from physical blows. You may use an ultrasonic cleaner or steamer to clean your diamond jewelry but be sure to examine the stone beforehand. If you notice any feathers, fractures, or inclusions, bring the item in for expert cleaning and inspection.

Emerald

Emerald belongs to the same mineral family as aquamarine, distinguished only by its green hue. Emerald is a soft stone that often contains inclusions and tiny fissures (typically filled with oils or resins to enhance appearance). We advise against using solvents (alcohol, acetone, ammonia etc.) and harsh chemicals to clean your emerald jewelry because they can dissolve the gem’s treatments, leading to a dull and altered appearance. For these reasons, avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steamers.

Garnet

Although a relatively hard and tough gem, the garnet does exhibit some heat sensitivity. While ultrasonic cleaners and steamers can generally be used safely (though risky if liquid inclusions are present)it’s crucial to avoid subjecting the stone to thermal shock.

Opal

Opals are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations so it’s essential that the water used to clean them remains at room temperature. Excessive heat and intense light promote dehydration which can result in crazing (cracking) if you’re not careful. Just like with pearls, refrain from wiping dirt off your opal jewelry as this can easily scratch the soft stone. Some natural, smoke, or sugar-treated opals are very porous so forgo use of liquids (jewelry polish) and ultrasonic cleaners and steamers.

Note that layered opals (doublets and triplets) should never be soaked in soapy water. This might dissolve the glue holding the layers together.

Pearl

Never dunk or even dip your pearls into the soap and water solution because moisture trapped in the drill holes can cause discoloration. This is why you must always thoroughly dry your pearl jewelry after any encounter with water. Similar to opals, pearls can become dehydrated and craze under intense heat and light. Avoid salt water, chlorine water, and household cleaners, all of which can weaken the nacre (outer layer of the pearl). We discourage the use of ultrasonic cleaners and steamers with pearls because of their sensitivities.

Peridot

Acids (even from perspiration), heat, and surface scratches can diminish the finish of peridot stones. If you do attempt to clean your peridot jewelry yourself, refrain from using any mechanical systems.

Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a fragile gemstone that is sensitive to heat and vibrations. To sidestep thermal shock, steer clear of ultrasonic and steam jewelry cleaners.

Topaz

Mechanical cleaning is dangerous for a stone such as topaz that is easily shocked. Plus, some yellow-brown varieties may fade from such mechanisms.

For the following gems, we insist on professional cleaning and deter you from using ultrasonic and steam cleaners entirely due to the delicacies of the stones.

Ruby and Sapphire

Ruby and sapphire gems, of the corundum family, undergo treatments that make nearly all cleaning methods unsafe. It’s best to let our trained team of jewelers handle the cleaning process of your ruby and sapphire jewelry.

Ruby wrap bracelet on female model

Tourmaline

Although a reasonably hard stone, tourmaline is vulnerable to vibration damage and stones treated with irradiation can fade under intense heat or light. Rest assured; your tourmaline jewelry is safe in the hands of our bench jewelers, who will return it to you in brand-new condition.

Tourmaline earrings on female model

Turquoise

Turquoise is a very porous gemstone material that most cleaning solutions will penetrate, turning it green and/or an unattractive off-blue color. Even handling, when not done with the appropriate considerations, can cause discoloring. Our on-site jewelers possess the tools and expertise to clean your turquoise jewelry with the proper techniques, ensuring a seamless process for both your jewelry and you.

The outcomes of at-home cleaning can vary significantly depending on the type and strength of the solutions you use and the intensity and frequency of their applications. Overall, we recommend having your precious gemstones cleaned by one of our professional jewelers and advise against washing them at home as a precaution to protect their quality. Our jewelry experts are at your service daily from 10 am-6 pm to address your every inquiry, either instore or over the phone.

Research is the first step in the right direction towards preserving the quality of your necklaces. Regular cleaning not only prevents potential damage but also ensures you can wear your necklaces anytime without concern for their condition. Cleaning your necklaces at home requires a velvet glove due to each material’s individual properties. Note that there is more than one way to clean these metals and stones, but these home necklace cleaning methods are the ones we recommend for the best results. For specific questions, consult one of our jewelry experts at the time of purchase or connect with us anytime through our store line at 402.391.0400.

Gold

The best way to clean a gold chain at home is with a simple mixture of lukewarm water and soft, fragrance-free soap. Add a few drops of the soap to a bowl of lukewarm water then gently swirl the chain around in the soapy water for a few minutes, taking care not to tangle it. Rinse the chain thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Gold boasts high corrosion resistance, so you can confidently use mild cleaning solutions and brushes without risk of damage. After cleaning your gold chain, give it a little extra shine with a polishing cloth by simply rubbing the cloth over the entire chain in a circular motion until it regains its luster. And voilà, you’re done.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver tends to tarnish, so you must adapt your necklace cleaning approach based on the severity of discoloration. The first remedy is for sterling silver necklaces that are slightly to mildly lackluster. Combine lukewarm water and soft, unscented soap then glide the chain in the mixture for a few minutes. Be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry after cleaning and follow up with a gentle buff using a silver polishing cloth. If the metal is highly tarnished, bring the necklace into our store for cleaning by an expert jeweler.

Gemstone

Most common gemstones respond well to a solution of lukewarm water and soft soap without any scrubbing. However, some—like pearls and opalsdo have sensitivities.

Tara Pearls White South Sea Cultured Pearl Strand with Diamond Clasp, 18.5"

Pearl

The chemical composition of pearls is different than most gemstones, so cleaners safe for gold, silver, and other gemstones can actually ruin them. The way your pearls are set also impacts the method of cleaning. Pearl necklaces are often strung on knotted silk cords, which can stain if exposed to cleaners and weaken if submerged in liquid for long periods of time. Another note is that pearls are particularly susceptible to scratches. It may be tempting, but resist the urge to wipe away dirt from your pearls because doing so could easily result in scratches. We suggest the following technique to clean your pearl necklaces. Wet a thin mesh rag with a soft, odorless soap and lukewarm water mixture and carefully wipe the pearls. To avoid getting excess moisture in the drill holes, never immerse your necklace in the soap and water mixture. Finish by drying your pearl necklace with a lint-free cloth. If you wear your pearls frequently, clean them at least once a month using a soft cloth or sponge and soft soap. When in doubt, leave your pearls with us for cleaning by a GIA-certified jeweler.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

In general, keep your necklaces away from harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbing methods, as these can harm delicate materials and gemstones. Never soak necklaces—this can weaken adhesives and compromise their integrity. Don’t forget that all parts of your necklaces need cleaning, including the clasp.

More Than Meets the Eye

Retaining the best of your necklaces is a task that requires ongoing dedication to be sure. Proper storage—preferably in individual compartments or soft pouches (for travel)—helps prevent tangling and buildup of dust and moisture. Avoid subjecting necklaces to chlorine pools, extreme temperatures, and strenuous activities that cause wear and tear.

While you can clean your necklaces at home, it’s a good idea to bring them in for professional cleaning every six months. Part of our Signature Service includes complimentary cleaning for all jewelry purchased from Borsheims. Not only will our in-house jewelers clean your necklaces, but they will also inspect for any damage that may have occurred your since last inspection. As an extra layer of security, we recommend insuring your necklaces to protect them from potential loss or damage. With proper maintenance and care, your pieces can continue to look as new and invigorated as the day you first wore them.

Your Necklace Care Essentials https://www.borsheims.com/blog/your-necklace-care-essentials/ Thu, 16 May 2024 14:02:10 +0000 https://www.borsheims.com/blog/?p=15026 Read on to discover the ins and outs of a simple yet effective necklace care routine.

The post Your Necklace Care Essentials appeared first on Borsheims.

]]>

Through the swirls of morning routines and the unwind of nightly rituals, the care of your necklaces can sometimes get forgotten. Starting is often the most difficult step. With our expert guidance, you don’t have to navigate the complexities of jewelry care alone. Take your daily necklace care regimen up a notch with this simple and effective routine.

Easy Does It

If anything, be gentle with your necklaces. Malleable materials like gold in higher carats and sterling silver are prone to bending, kinking, or stretching when mishandled. Delicate chains also require your special attention; the intricacy of their links is fragile and difficult to mend without compromising their original structure. Habitual tugging weakens the clasps and connectors, increasing the likelihood of your necklaces falling off unexpectedly and getting lost.

Apply any cosmetics before putting on your necklaces, as harsh chemicals can leave residue and spoil fine materials. When putting on or taking off your necklace, do so over a soft surface to cushion any accidental drops. Always fasten the clasp securely to prevent accidental breakage.

A pro tip: make your necklaces the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night.

TANE Fabiana Sterling Silver Chain Necklace, 23.6"

Wear with Care

The primary elements to be vigilant of involve water exposure and any extreme elements. Temperature changes and the chemicals in pools and hot tubs can cause or facilitate breakage. In general, remove your necklaces before swimming, showering, exercising, and cleaning. Also consider the fabrics you often wear. Over time, coarse materials like wool can wear down the metal or gemstone settings of your necklaces.

The More You Store

Proper storage is essential to preventing your necklace from tangling, scratching, or becoming damaged. Jewelry travel cases have compartments and straps to keep each necklace in place. Or you can take advantage of small drawstring pouches for tangle-free transport of larger necklaces. Just remember to store your necklaces separately, especially when traveling. Gold, sterling silver, and platinum can scratch easily. The culet of a diamond especially can cause inadvertent damage by rubbing against other diamonds and gemstonesThis risk is heightened in close-set diamond necklaces.

Placing necklaces directly on a wooden dresser instead of a case with a soft lining can result in tiny scratches that dull the surface shine. Just resting your necklaces on surfaces with microscopic roughness like concrete (when swimming) can contribute to gradual material erosion. We recommend purchasing a necklace stand, jewelry box, or hanging organizer with individual hooks, compartments, or pockets, respectively, to keep each piece separated and protected.

A pro tip: reclasp your necklaces before stowing to minimize the risk of severe knots and tangles.

WOLF Caroline Zip Travel Case in Red

Maintain to Sustain

If you choose to clean your necklaces over a sink, close the drain before beginning. It is safe to clean almost all fine jewelry using a mild soap and water solution and a soft brush, but never use abrasive cleaners on gold and sterling silver necklaces. Depending on the necklace’s design and frequency of wear, Borsheims can polish the metal and/or re-apply rhodium plating on white gold to add sheen. If you wear your necklaces regularly, clean them regularly. Do so with the appropriate cleaner for the metal and stone. Always consult the jewelry experts at Borsheims for the best cleaning procedure for your necklace.

As a part of our Signature Service, we offer complimentary cleaning of necklaces purchased from Borsheims.

Bring your necklaces into our store in Omaha’s Regency district at least every six months for periodic inspection and maintenance. An in-house jeweler will assess the condition of your necklaces, check for any loose stones or clasps, and perform the necessary repairs or adjustments to ensure they remain in mint condition.

A well-maintained necklace will serve you for a lifetime of wears. Adopt and commit to this routine so your necklaces are ready to be worn at a moment’s notice.

Are Necklaces Really Waterproof? https://www.borsheims.com/blog/are-necklaces-really-waterproof/ Tue, 14 May 2024 19:56:42 +0000 https://www.borsheims.com/blog/?p=14581 Read on to determine if necklaces are really waterproof and what makes them this way.

The post Are Necklaces Really Waterproof? appeared first on Borsheims.

]]>

Unfortunately, not all that glitters can swim—your necklaces included. However, there are types of jewelry that can withstand minor water exposure, which is why we favor the term “water-resistant necklaces” as opposed to “waterproof necklaces.” While these expressions are often used interchangeably and necklaces are typically advertised as waterproof, all jewelry is subject to some degradation over time, making it resistant—but not proof—to water.

While no necklace can claim to be entirely waterproof, with the right knowledge and practices, you can safeguard your jewelry from those unavoidable run-ins with water.

Factors Affecting Necklace Water Resistance

The water resistance of a necklace is largely dependent on a few factors: necklace metal type properties of gemstones in your necklace craftsmanship and material quality—which is why we only source our jewelry from reputable designers.

Level of Protection by Material

Not all necklace metals and gemstones are created equal. Read on to find out just how water resistant certain jewelry metals and gemstones are.

Titanium

Titanium necklaces are exceptionally resistant to corrosion from saltwater and chlorine. They’re also very lightweightThis makes titanium a practical metal for necklaces, without compromise, for water enthusiasts and those who lead active lifestyles.

Platinum

Platinum is a remarkably durable necklace option due in full to its high density and non-reactive properties. The substantial weight and strength of this metal protects it against damage that might compromise its appearance or structural integrity. Platinum necklaces have less of an edge over titanium necklaces because they are less resilient to saline environments.

If you prefer low-maintenance necklaces that are resistant to most water situations, titanium and platinum necklaces are ideal options.

Gold

Gold is a very stable element; it repels oxidation and corrosion when subjected to waterthus retaining its luster over time. The purer the gold, the better it resists water. But the purer it is, the softer it gets, making it more fragile. That’s why higher-karat gold is commonly alloyed with other metals like copper or rhodium, balancing bling and strength.

Sterling Silver and Brass

Do not expect your sterling silver necklaces to survive a dive or even a dip! Any necklace comprised of sterling silver should be kept far away from bodies of water. Exposure to chlorinated water not only leads to tarnishing but can also result in irreversible damage. Even water with little to no chemical content can dull the metal faster.

Brass necklaces, like sterling silver, are more susceptible to deteriorating rapidly over time. When you wear brass jewelry, your skin acids and salts from sweat interact with the metal and accelerate the process uncontrollably.

Gemstone

Gemstone necklaces require a little extra TLC and regular checkup even when not in direct contact with water. The elements in the stones can react with water, changing their appearance or even causing damage. Two main attributes matter when it comes to the water resistance of gemstones: hardness and porosity. Hardness, as measured on the Mohs Scale, is like a gem’s toughness. Stones with a higher rating can handle water better than softer stones. Porosity refers to the amount of liquid a stone can soak up. Gemstones with a lower porosity don’t absorb water as easily, so they’re less likely to get damaged

Diamonds are the hardest material on Earth. It’s no wonder then that they’re commonly chosen for daily wear jewelry, like engagement rings. Diamonds are composed of a single element: carbon, whose arrangement contributes to the diamond’s brilliant quality. Diamonds earn a perfect 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. They also lack the channels that allow water to penetrate and cause damage. This repertoire ensures your diamonds retain their shine even if they do get wet.

There are other hard gemstones (>5 on the Mohs Scale) that exhibit resilience to water. Quartz crystals, such as amethyst and citrine, are one such example.

Out of abundance of precaution, we advise you not to prolong water exposure to any gemstone below a hardness of 5 on the Mohs Scale. Pearls (level 2.5-3 level hardness) are particularly sensitive to water. Their composite is so porous that the stones will dull and eventually deteriorate if in extended contact with water.

Opals (level 5-6.5 hardness) are a unique case. Solid opal actually contains water, so immersing it in water does little harm. On the other hand, opals that have been layered—either as doublets or triplets—with additional materials will suffer water damage, which can manifest as cracking and/or an altered, cloudy appearance.

The Mohs Scale, while useful, is not the sole determinant of a gemstone’s water resistance. The material composite of these stones varies, and the minerals may still incur damage from water despite their Mohs rating. A hard gemstone like Topaz (level 8 hardness) can break from sudden temperature fluctuations. Peridot (level 6-7 hardness), the gem variant of the mineral Olivine, is susceptible to chemical weathering when exposed to moisture, dulling its sheen and ruining its integrity. Turquoise (level 5-6 hardness) is porous in nature and absorbs substances from the liquids it comes into contact with, leading to a number of defects. Water also removes the natural oils of turquoise, drying out the stone and leading to cracks.

Prevention and Aftercare

Always take off your necklaces before you shower, swim, or exercise. Water and certain chemicals, e.g. chlorine, within can mess with the material, causing it to tarnish or change color. Sweat can speed up the tarnishing process for some materials too. We recommend storing your necklaces in a dedicated, dry storage spot while you enjoy the water. If your necklaces accidentally get wet, immediately dry them off thoroughly with a soft cloth; this will help prevent any water spots or damage. Materials like titanium and platinum will not show the wear and tear of these events like sterling silver and brass. If you notice any discoloration or changes in your jewelry, bring it to our jewelers for proper cleaning and restoration.

It is tempting to wear your favorite jewelry everywhere, but some fine jewelry is not meant for water. Even water-resistant necklaces require careful handling to prolong their lifespan. When in doubt, refer to the care instructions provided at the time of purchase or call us at 402.391.0400.

Are you wondering whether you can sleep with a necklace on? Is it safe for you? Is it safe for the necklace? The short answer is yes you can, but it’s not so straightforward. Your necklace’s gemstones and metals – pearl, gold, platinum, or sterling silver – should significantly influence your decision. Here’s a closer look at the implications of sleeping with your necklace on, including factors like the durability of the jewelry and your own personal safety.

Pearl Necklaces

Pearls have an undeniable charm, but they are fragile and demand careful handling. Sleeping with your pearl necklace on can damage it due to friction with your pillow or sheets. Additionally, your sweat and body oils may dull your pearls’ luster over time. The string of your pearl necklace can also weaken if slept in repeatedly, resulting in a scattered pearl disaster. Although you can sleep with a pearl necklace on, we discourage doing this.

Gold Necklaces

Fine gold is famous for its durability, but it isn’t as prone to damage during sleep. Nevertheless, the chain might entangle or get caught in your hair or pillowcase, causing breakage, or even posing a strangulation risk to you. Gold scratches easily, too, and prolonged contact with your skin may wear down the metal. If your gold necklace includes gemstones, the settings that hold the gems might weaken. So, even with its robustness, it’s preferable to remove your gold necklace before you go to sleep.

Sterling Silver Necklaces

Sterling silver might be sturdy, but it tarnishes quickly, especially when it’s exposed to your sweat and body oils. Consistent contact during sleep may dull its shine. Sterling silver chains, similar to gold chains, might become tangled or even break during sleep. To preserve its allure, we recommend removing your sterling silver necklaces before you go to sleep.

Platinum Necklaces

Platinum is renowned for its durability, ever-fading white luster and hypoallergenic properties, making it a top choice for necklace. However, the risks of sleeping with a platinum necklace mirror those of gold and sterling silver. Tangling, breakage, and minor scratches due to friction are potential pitfalls. Also, intricate designs or those with gemstones could suffer damage. Despite these risks, if you still choose to sleep with your platinum necklace on, make sure it’s not too tight and the clasp is secure.

Risks & Precautions

Sleeping with your necklace on can pose risks such as choking hazards, skin irritation, and damage to your jewelry. If you’re a restless sleeper or have sensitive skin, these concerns are particularly relevant. Always secure the clasp and check the chain’s condition before sleeping with your necklace on.

Although technically possible, we generally advise customers against wearing their necklaces to bed. The best practice is to remove all your jewelry before bed to maintain its condition and to keep you safe. Regular cleaning and inspection can also enhance your jewelry’s lifespan and prevent accidents or discomfort during sleep. Use a soft cloth or at-home jewelry cleaner for gold and sterling silver and use a damp cloth for pearls. Adequate storage in a jewelry box can also help prevent tangling and damage.
