Most times a necklace is all it takes to put the finishing touch on your wedding day look. While other accessories can complement your attire, they often come with drawbacks. Earrings might tangle with your hair or come off, and bracelets can be cumbersome and intrusive. A necklace, though, is a worry-free accessory, especially if you’re only wearing one. If you are, however, guessing how to style your necklace alongside other accessories, we have some insider tips to help you create a cohesive appearance and circumvent any complications.

Mikimoto pearl wedding necklace and bracelet

Bridal Pearl Necklace

Incorporating the soft, iridescent sheen of pearls into your wedding day is the perfect nod to a pure and everlasting love. If you’re a June bride, a pearl necklace is an easy choice, as pearls are the birthstone for the month. Ask to dig through your mother’s or grandmother’s jewelry boxesyou may find a set of pearls that fulfills both your Something Old and Something Borrowed.

Diamond Wedding Necklace

Diamonds are a bride’s best friend, and a diamond necklace is one you can wear long after your wedding day. If your dress is minimalist, you have the flexibility to choose a more elaborate diamond necklace. If your gown is embellished with beadwork, embroidery, or lace, a delicate chain with a single diamond will supplement beautifully without overwhelming the details. Strive for elegance without excessive flashiness to guarantee the focus remains on you and the dress itself.

Sapphire blue wedding necklace

Something Blue Wedding Necklace

A tale as old as time, not to be overlooked, especially if it fits the schema of your wedding. Sapphire, aquamarine, and blue topaz are some of the many blue jewels in our collection of precious gemstone necklaces. When styling a blue gemstone necklace, consider matching it with other blue gemstone accessories. But, be mindful not to overdo it. Less is often more when it comes to bridal jewelry and over-accessorizing can lead to a cluttered look. Select a few key pieces that complement your dress rather than wearing necklace, earrings, bracelets, and rings all at once.

Lariat wedding necklace styled on female model

Lariat Wedding Necklace

Lariat necklaces are particularly stunning with plunging or v-neck gowns because they mirror the neckline’s shape. For a backless dress, try draping the lariat down your back for a dramatic, unexpected twist. The fabric and style of your dress can also influence how you style your lariat necklace. For instance, a flowing, bohemian dress pairs beautifully with a more relaxed, loosely tied lariat. Ease the daytonight transition by layering your lariat necklace with shorter necklaces that you can shed as the day progresses.

Designer Wedding Necklace

You can’t go wrong with a designer necklace. The originality of the designs can set you apart from the norm. Though, try to avoid any visible branding that can detract from your aesthetic. Rahaminov, Roberto Coin, and Mikimoto are just a few posh brands with necklaces that scream “bride.”

Bridal Choker Necklace

If your dress is simple, but by no means plain, and you want to draw more attention, accessorizing with a choker necklace can accomplish just that. A choker is most practical with an updo hairstyle; it accentuates the necklace and neckline while preventing tangles.

Borsheims yellow gold cross wedding necklace

Bridal Cross Necklace

A cross necklace is a meaningful ode to faith for your upcoming nuptials, especially if you’re getting married in a church. A diamond or gold cross necklace can deepen the spiritual significance of your union. We only suggest that you keep your jewelry within the same metal family e.g., all white gold. Mismatched metals can create a disjointed appearance.

If you really want to make sure your necklace stays in place all day, apply a small amount of eyelash glue where you want it to hold. This way, you won’t need to worry about adjusting it for photos.

You’re already planning enough. Let us oblige you in selecting your wedding day jewelry. Schedule an appointment with one of our jewelry experts today and secure your wedding jewelry all in one trip.

What Is a Choker Necklace?

A choker is a necklace 14 to 16 inches in length. It can be adorned with anything from gemstones to charms or simply feature base metals like gold and platinum. Ripe with cultural and historical significance, chokers are now experiencing a revival in popular fashion.

Chokers should be tight, but not so close fitting that they impact your breathing or squeeze your skin. Your face shape and neck width have an effect on the most flattering choker for you. Fuller faces and wider necks look best in narrower chokers, while heart-shaped faces and strong jawlines can pull off any width. If you have a narrower, oval face, or a thin neck, consider wider bands or chunky chains for balance. If your neck is both short and wide, or you have a fuller face, chokers may not be the most flattering choice, as they can shorten your neck and emphasize the fullness of your face.

Measure your choker size by wrapping a tape measure snugly around the base of your neck. Note the measurement then add 2 inches, and now you’ve got your length.

Diamond Choker Necklace

Diamond chokers are typically reserved for special occasions, but don’t let that stop you from wearing them more often. These pieces are a favorite for royalty and celebrities alike. Keep in mind that the thicker the choker, the bigger the statement. For a more casual appearance, don a dainty tennis choker necklace instead.

Pearl Choker Necklace

Pearls are everywhere and have undeniably made their mark on the bridal scene. Pearl chokers were made for strapless and off-the-shoulder gowns, accentuating the neckline with pure perfection. Embrace the timeless elegance of pearls with a modern twist and you’ll fall even more in love with your wedding day look.

Chain Choker Necklace

Chain chokers consist of a single chain (typically gold or sterling silver) and are able to be either understated or dramatic depending on the thickness and style. A dainty choker necklace exemplifies minimalism at its finest, supplementing your outfit without overwhelming it. We recommend pairing your chain choker with longer necklaces to add texture. The gold choker necklace shown here is lovely on its own but could be elevated when layered. In this post, learn how to layer your necklaces in a way that appears intentional yet is effortlessly chic.

Flora and Fauna Choker Necklaces

Flora and fauna chokers are trendy necklaces bursting with detail in every which way. Animal chokers with their fierce motifs can empower any wearer, while the fanciful designs of flower chokers appeal to a flirty and feminine side.

Fashion Choker Necklace

Fashion chokers are more accessible than their fine jewelry counterparts, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious individuals eager to experiment with different trends. A Swarovski choker necklace, for example, gives all the luxury feels at a more affordable price point.

How To Wear a Choker

How you wear your choker is entirely up to you, but here are our tips so you don’t commit any fashion faux pas.

Choose a neckline that leaves space between your choker and your chest i.e., a v neck, strapless, sweetheart, and square. This will elongate your neck and balance your proportions. While your outfit and choker can contrast, avoid wearing a choker with an outfit that clashes in color or style, like a busy dress with an ornate choker. The right choker will complete your look not compete with it. Be especially mindful of other jewelry you choose to wear alongside your choker. Earrings should frame your face without interfering with the necklace. Ultimately, it’s our advice to pick a choker that checks all your boxes.

Designer Chokers

Each of these brands offers a fresh take on designer choker necklaces, keeping them relevant for today’s fashion forward individuals.

FOPE

FOPE is an Italian jewelry designer renowned for their innovative Flex’it technology. The craftsmanship infuses two-tone metals with a flexible design, resulting in chokers that are both luxurious and comfortable.

Traveling with necklaces is like traveling with any jewelry: you want to be extra careful because the materials you carry are so valuable. The mode of your travel really affects how much control you have over the security of your necklaces. By adjusting your packing strategy to your travel method, you can ensure your necklaces remain intact, unblemished, and untangled, no matter how you reach your destination.

How to Pack Necklaces for Travel

Having a well-thought-out strategy in place before you start packing is key. There’s nothing worse than the chaos of last-minute packing, especially when fragile items are involved. Remember, each piece of jewelry is different, so your storage method will need to adapt accordingly. When it comes to necklaces, avoid tangling by using straws to separate. For a hasslefree experience, we recommend acquiring an airtight, hard-shell necklace travel case to manage your necklaces on the go and protect them from any impact, pressure, or moisture they might encounter during the journey.

Packing Necklaces for the Car

When driving to your destination, you have greater control over how your belongings are handled. Make sure your necklace box or storage substitute is stowed in a stable, upright position to avoid any jostling. Ideally, secure it in the glove compartment or another area where it won’t slide around. Always keep the car cool, as extreme temperatures can damage certain types of metal and gemstones. Wherever you go, your necklaces should go too. Steer clear of leaving your necklaces in the car overnighdue to temperature swings and the threat of theft.

Tips for Flying with Necklaces

Traveling with jewelry always presents certain hazards, but particularly during air travel because of security screenings and luggage handling. Always pack your necklaces in your carry-on baggage, as checked luggage is subject to rough handling and could be lost. Even within your carry-on, use the organizational tips mentioned—such as straws and airtight, hard-shell necklace organizers—to prevent tangling and damage. Look for necklace travel organizers that have specific compartments or individual pockets designed to keep each necklace separate—some even come with hooks or straps to keep chains from tangling. Be prepared to remove your necklaces from your person or your carry-on during security checks, as certain items may trigger additional screening.

The Best Way to Pack Necklaces for a Cruise

Maritime travel introduces unique challenges like humidity and constant motion. To protect your necklaces from the salty sea air and potential impacts, we suggest using combination of a waterproof, airtight necklace container and straws to separate chains.  Store your necklaces in a secure and stable spot within your cabin, away from areas prone to excessive movement.

In case of water contact, bring along a soft polishing cloth to clean any residue that may accumulate on your necklaces while onboard.

If you’re at a hotel, put your necklaces in the room safe when you aren’t wearing them. This precaution offers extra peace of mind while you’re out and about for the day.

Travel without worry by utilizing the right tools and techniques to safeguard your necklaces, ensuring they’re ready to wear upon arrival. In need of a jewelry organizer for your upcoming trip in a hurry? Visit us in Omaha’s Regency district or give us a call and we’ll help you find your perfect travel companion. In the unfortunate event that your necklaces are damaged during travel, we provide onsite jewelry repair for all items purchased from us.

When you understand the terminology of a necklace and its components, the buying process becomes that much easier, and you can truly find a necklace that aligns with your preferences, taste, and budget. Let’s dissect the anatomy of a necklace so you have the confidence to make more informed decisions when selecting your next piece.

Parts of a necklace labeled

Chain

At the core of every necklace is its chain. Chains come in many styles with each type offering its own look and feel. For instance, a link chain provides a bolder appeal while a cable chain exudes simplicity. Getting to know the top types of chain necklaces can guide you in selecting the ideal option for layering or wearing as a stand-alone accessory.

Pendant

A pendant is a piece of jewelry suspended from the chain, often crafted from metal, gemstones, or other materials. Be wary that gemstones require a more specialized cleaning process than the chain material. For detailed instructions, read our article on cleaning precious gemstones or contact the store for specific guidance.

A locket is a type of pendant that opens to reveal a space for storing a small item, usually a photograph. While a locket is always a pendant, not all pendants are lockets.

Consider storing your pendant necklaces in a hanging organizer to ensure they remain untangled and easily accessible for every wear.

Jump Ring

The jump ring is the small, circular metal ring that connects to the necklace clasp for easy fastening. Not all necklaces have jump rings, but most do due to their practicality.

Necklace Clasp

The clasp is the closure mechanism that secures the necklace around the wearer’s neck. Below are some common necklace clasp types and their functions.

Spring Ring Clasp

A spring ring consists of a hollow circular metal ring with a small spring-loaded lever attached to one side. Applying pressure to the lever will create an opening in the ring. Once the jump ring is in place, release the lever to securely close the clasp around it.

Eagle Clasp

The eagle clasp features a design that resembles an eagle’s beak, where one part hooks into a corresponding loop on the other end of the chain. To fasten the necklace, simply insert the hook into the loop. This clasp is particularly convenient for those who find traditional spring-loaded mechanisms challenging.

Necklace eagle clasp

Box Clasp

The box clasp consists of two main components: the box and the tongue. The box is a hollow rectangular or square-shaped piece with an open slot along one side. The tongue is a corresponding piece that fits snugly into the channel of the box. To fix a box clasp, insert the tongue of one end of the necklace into the open slot of the box on the opposite end. The tongue slides into the box until it reaches a secure locking mechanism. Once fully inserted, the tongue locks into place within the box.

Necklace box clasp

Hook Clasp

A hook clasp, also referred to as a fish hook clasp or a hook and eye clasp, includes a hook shaped like a fishhook that latches onto an insertable part. To seal the necklace, push the hook through the insertable piece until it clicks into place. This design is commonly used with pearl necklaces, offering both a reliable and discreet method of closure.

Lobster Clasp

The lobster claw clasp incorporates a metal hook and a small, spring-loaded lever, much like a spring ring clasp. Insert the jump ring into the clasp’s opening and then release the lever to close the clasp and hold the necklace in place.

Magnetic Clasp

Some of our necklaces come with user-friendly magnetic necklace clasps (see product details for specifics). Depending on their size, magnetic clasps may sometimes trigger the metal detectors at the airport. We recommend informing the TSA agents during your security check to avoid any potential delays.

Necklace Extender

The extender enables the wearer to adjust the necklace length by elongating the chain to their liking.

Research is the first step in the right direction towards preserving the quality of your necklaces. Regular cleaning not only prevents potential damage but also ensures you can wear your necklaces anytime without concern for their condition. Cleaning your necklaces at home requires a velvet glove due to each material’s individual properties. Note that there is more than one way to clean these metals and stones, but these home necklace cleaning methods are the ones we recommend for the best results. For specific questions, consult one of our jewelry experts at the time of purchase or connect with us anytime through our store line at 402.391.0400.

Gold

The best way to clean a gold chain at home is with a simple mixture of lukewarm water and soft, fragrance-free soap. Add a few drops of the soap to a bowl of lukewarm water then gently swirl the chain around in the soapy water for a few minutes, taking care not to tangle it. Rinse the chain thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Gold boasts high corrosion resistance, so you can confidently use mild cleaning solutions and brushes without risk of damage. After cleaning your gold chain, give it a little extra shine with a polishing cloth by simply rubbing the cloth over the entire chain in a circular motion until it regains its luster. And voilà, you’re done.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver tends to tarnish, so you must adapt your necklace cleaning approach based on the severity of discoloration. The first remedy is for sterling silver necklaces that are slightly to mildly lackluster. Combine lukewarm water and soft, unscented soap then glide the chain in the mixture for a few minutes. Be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry after cleaning and follow up with a gentle buff using a silver polishing cloth.  If the metal is highly tarnished, bring the necklace into our store for cleaning by an expert jeweler.

Gemstone

Most common gemstones respond well to a solution of lukewarm water and soft soap without any scrubbing. However, some—like pearls and opalsdo have sensitivities.

Tara Pearls White South Sea Cultured Pearl Strand with Diamond Clasp, 18.5"

Pearl

The chemical composition of pearls is different than most gemstones, so cleaners safe for gold, silver, and other gemstones can actually ruin them. The way your pearls are set also impacts the method of cleaning. Pearl necklaces are often strung on knotted silk cords, which can stain if exposed to cleaners and weaken if submerged in liquid for long periods of time. Another note is that pearls are particularly susceptible to scratches. It may be tempting, but resist the urge to wipe away dirt from your pearls because doing so could easily result in scratches. We suggest the following technique to clean your pearl necklaces. Wet a thin mesh rag with a soft, odorless soap and lukewarm water mixture and carefully wipe the pearls. To avoid getting excess moisture in the drill holes, never immerse your necklace in the soap and water mixture. Finish by drying your pearl necklace with a lint-free cloth. If you wear your pearls frequently, clean them at least once a month using a soft cloth or sponge and soft soap. When in doubt, leave your pearls with us for cleaning by a GIA-certified jeweler.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

In general, keep your necklaces away from harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbing methods, as these can harm delicate materials and gemstones. Never soak necklaces—this can weaken adhesives and compromise their integrity. Don’t forget that all parts of your necklaces need cleaning, including the clasp.

More Than Meets the Eye

Retaining the best of your necklaces is a task that requires ongoing dedication to be sure. Proper storage—preferably in individual compartments or soft pouches (for travel)—helps prevent tangling and buildup of dust and moisture. Avoid subjecting necklaces to chlorine pools, extreme temperatures, and strenuous activities that cause wear and tear.

While you can clean your necklaces at home, it’s a good idea to bring them in for professional cleaning every six months. Part of our Signature Service includes complimentary cleaning for all jewelry purchased from Borsheims. Not only will our in-house jewelers clean your necklaces, but they will also inspect for any damage that may have occurred your since last inspection. As an extra layer of security, we recommend insuring your necklaces to protect them from potential loss or damage. With proper maintenance and care, your pieces can continue to look as new and invigorated as the day you first wore them.

Your Necklace Care Essentials https://www.borsheims.com/blog/your-necklace-care-essentials/ Thu, 16 May 2024 14:02:10 +0000 https://www.borsheims.com/blog/?p=15026 Read on to discover the ins and outs of a simple yet effective necklace care routine.

Through the swirls of morning routines and the unwind of nightly rituals, the care of your necklaces can sometimes get forgotten. Starting is often the most difficult step. With our expert guidance, you don’t have to navigate the complexities of jewelry care alone. Take your daily necklace care regimen up a notch with this simple and effective routine.

Easy Does It

If anything, be gentle with your necklaces. Malleable materials like gold in higher carats and sterling silver are prone to bending, kinking, or stretching when mishandled. Delicate chains also require your special attention; the intricacy of their links is fragile and difficult to mend without compromising their original structure. Habitual tugging weakens the clasps and connectors, increasing the likelihood of your necklaces falling off unexpectedly and getting lost.

Apply any cosmetics before putting on your necklaces, as harsh chemicals can leave residue and spoil fine materials. When putting on or taking off your necklace, do so over a soft surface to cushion any accidental drops. Always fasten the clasp securely to prevent accidental breakage.

A pro tip: make your necklaces the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night.

TANE Fabiana Sterling Silver Chain Necklace, 23.6"

Wear with Care

The primary elements to be vigilant of involve water exposure and any extreme elements. Temperature changes and the chemicals in pools and hot tubs can cause or facilitate breakage. In general, remove your necklaces before swimming, showering, exercising, and cleaning. Also consider the fabrics you often wear. Over time, coarse materials like wool can wear down the metal or gemstone settings of your necklaces.

The More You Store

Proper storage is essential to preventing your necklace from tangling, scratching, or becoming damaged. Jewelry travel cases have compartments and straps to keep each necklace in place. Or you can take advantage of small drawstring pouches for tangle-free transport of larger necklaces. Just remember to store your necklaces separately, especially when traveling. Gold, sterling silver, and platinum can scratch easily. The culet of a diamond especially can cause inadvertent damage by rubbing against other diamonds and gemstonesThis risk is heightened in close-set diamond necklaces.

Placing necklaces directly on a wooden dresser instead of a case with a soft lining can result in tiny scratches that dull the surface shine. Just resting your necklaces on surfaces with microscopic roughness like concrete (when swimming) can contribute to gradual material erosion. We recommend purchasing a necklace stand, jewelry box, or hanging organizer with individual hooks, compartments, or pockets, respectively, to keep each piece separated and protected.

A pro tip: reclasp your necklaces before stowing to minimize the risk of severe knots and tangles.

WOLF Caroline Zip Travel Case in Red

Maintain to Sustain

If you choose to clean your necklaces over a sink, close the drain before beginning. It is safe to clean almost all fine jewelry using a mild soap and water solution and a soft brush, but never use abrasive cleaners on gold and sterling silver necklaces. Depending on the necklace’s design and frequency of wear, Borsheims can polish the metal and/or re-apply rhodium plating on white gold to add sheen. If you wear your necklaces regularly, clean them regularly. Do so with the appropriate cleaner for the metal and stone. Always consult the jewelry experts at Borsheims for the best cleaning procedure for your necklace.

As a part of our Signature Service, we offer complimentary cleaning of necklaces purchased from Borsheims.

Bring your necklaces into our store in Omaha’s Regency district at least every six months for periodic inspection and maintenance. An in-house jeweler will assess the condition of your necklaces, check for any loose stones or clasps, and perform the necessary repairs or adjustments to ensure they remain in mint condition.

A well-maintained necklace will serve you for a lifetime of wears. Adopt and commit to this routine so your necklaces are ready to be worn at a moment’s notice.

Are Necklaces Really Waterproof? https://www.borsheims.com/blog/are-necklaces-really-waterproof/ Tue, 14 May 2024 19:56:42 +0000 https://www.borsheims.com/blog/?p=14581 Read on to determine if necklaces are really waterproof and what makes them this way.

The post Are Necklaces Really Waterproof? appeared first on Borsheims.

]]>

Unfortunately, not all that glitters can swim—your necklaces included. However, there are types of jewelry that can withstand minor water exposure, which is why we favor the term “water-resistant necklaces” as opposed to “waterproof necklaces.” While these expressions are often used interchangeably and necklaces are typically advertised as waterproof, all jewelry is subject to some degradation over time, making it resistant—but not proof—to water.

While no necklace can claim to be entirely waterproof, with the right knowledge and practices, you can safeguard your jewelry from those unavoidable run-ins with water.

Factors Affecting Necklace Water Resistance

The water resistance of a necklace is largely dependent on a few factors: necklace metal type properties of gemstones in your necklace craftsmanship and material quality—which is why we only source our jewelry from reputable designers.

Level of Protection by Material

Not all necklace metals and gemstones are created equal. Read on to find out just how water resistant certain jewelry metals and gemstones are.

Titanium

Titanium necklaces are exceptionally resistant to corrosion from saltwater and chlorine. They’re also very lightweightThis makes titanium a practical metal for necklaces, without compromise, for water enthusiasts and those who lead active lifestyles.

Platinum

Platinum is a remarkably durable necklace option due in full to its high density and non-reactive properties. The substantial weight and strength of this metal protects it against damage that might compromise its appearance or structural integrity. Platinum necklaces have less of an edge over titanium necklaces because they are less resilient to saline environments.

If you prefer low-maintenance necklaces that are resistant to most water situations, titanium and platinum necklaces are ideal options.

Gold

Gold is a very stable element; it repels oxidation and corrosion when subjected to waterthus retaining its luster over time. The purer the gold, the better it resists water. But the purer it is, the softer it gets, making it more fragile. That’s why higher-karat gold is commonly alloyed with other metals like copper or rhodium, balancing bling and strength.

Pesavento DNA Spring 5 Strand Yellow Gold Vermeil Collar Necklace, 17"

Sterling Silver and Brass

Do not expect your sterling silver necklaces to survive a dive or even a dip! Any necklace comprised of sterling silver should be kept far away from bodies of water. Exposure to chlorinated water not only leads to tarnishing but can also result in irreversible damage. Even water with little to no chemical content can dull the metal faster.

Brass necklaces, like sterling silver, are more susceptible to deteriorating rapidly over time. When you wear brass jewelry, your skin acids and salts from sweat interact with the metal and accelerate the process uncontrollably.

John Varvatos Black Diamond Dog Tag Pendant in Sterling Silver, 24"

Gemstone

Gemstone necklaces require a little extra TLC and regular checkup even when not in direct contact with water. The elements in the stones can react with water, changing their appearance or even causing damage. Two main attributes matter when it comes to the water resistance of gemstones: hardness and porosity. Hardness, as measured on the Mohs Scale, is like a gem’s toughness. Stones with a higher rating can handle water better than softer stones. Porosity refers to the amount of liquid a stone can soak up. Gemstones with a lower porosity don’t absorb water as easily, so they’re less likely to get damaged

Diamonds are the hardest material on Earth. It’s no wonder then that they’re commonly chosen for daily wear jewelry, like engagement rings. Diamonds are composed of a single element: carbon, whose arrangement contributes to the diamond’s brilliant quality. Diamonds earn a perfect 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. They also lack the channels that allow water to penetrate and cause damage. This repertoire ensures your diamonds retain their shine even if they do get wet.

There are other hard gemstones (>5 on the Mohs Scale) that exhibit resilience to water. Quartz crystals, such as amethyst and citrine, are one such example.

Out of abundance of precaution, we advise you not to prolong water exposure to any gemstone below a hardness of 5 on the Mohs Scale. Pearls (level 2.5-3 level hardness) are particularly sensitive to water. Their composite is so porous that the stones will dull and eventually deteriorate if in extended contact with water.

Opals (level 5-6.5 hardness) are a unique case. Solid opal actually contains water, so immersing it in water does little harm. On the other hand, opals that have been layered—either as doublets or triplets—with additional materials will suffer water damage, which can manifest as cracking and/or an altered, cloudy appearance.

The Mohs Scale, while useful, is not the sole determinant of a gemstone’s water resistance. The material composite of these stones varies, and the minerals may still incur damage from water despite their Mohs rating. A hard gemstone like Topaz (level 8 hardness) can break from sudden temperature fluctuations. Peridot (level 6-7 hardness), the gem variant of the mineral Olivine, is susceptible to chemical weathering when exposed to moisture, dulling its sheen and ruining its integrity. Turquoise (level 5-6 hardness) is porous in nature and absorbs substances from the liquids it comes into contact with, leading to a number of defects. Water also removes the natural oils of turquoise, drying out the stone and leading to cracks.

Prevention and Aftercare

Always take off your necklaces before you shower, swim, or exercise. Water and certain chemicals, e.g. chlorine, within can mess with the material, causing it to tarnish or change color. Sweat can speed up the tarnishing process for some materials too. We recommend storing your necklaces in a dedicated, dry storage spot while you enjoy the water. If your necklaces accidentally get wet, immediately dry them off thoroughly with a soft cloth; this will help prevent any water spots or damage.  Materials like titanium and platinum will not show the wear and tear of these events like sterling silver and brass. If you notice any discoloration or changes in your jewelry, bring it to our jewelers for proper cleaning and restoration.

It is tempting to wear your favorite jewelry everywhere, but some fine jewelry is not meant for water. Even water-resistant necklaces require careful handling to prolong their lifespan. When in doubt, refer to the care instructions provided at the time of purchase or call us at 402.391.0400.

When shopping for or wearing a necklace, especially a men’s necklace, size truly does matter. The length of your necklace greatly adds to or detracts from the formality of your attire—something that, depending on the occasion, you won’t want to overlook. Borsheims is dedicated to the concept that different lengths do serve different purposes, which is why this expert guide will help you choose necklace lengths that best align with you and your lifestyle.

Determining length from the start will significantly streamline the selection process. To initially identify chain lengths that suit you, we recommend an at-home method, so grab a tape measure and follow along!

Take the measuring tape and wrap it around your neck. Then position it at the point where you want the necklace to rest. Hold the ends together and note the necklace size measurement.

A good length for a men’s chain falls within a range of sizes and depends on a variety of factors. Keep on reading below for a more comprehensive chain size guide based on standard men’s necklace lengths.

Standard Necklace Lengths for Men

An 18 inch necklace is considered a choker necklace on a man. Men’s choker necklaces have gone in and out of style over the years and, while ladies choker necklaces continue to trend, men don’t seem to be embracing them with the same fervor. However, they have found their own niche among specific circles.

A 20 inch necklace lands just at the collarbone. It pairs nicely with many necklines and is appropriate for both pendant and non-pendant necklaces.

This length might pose a slight challenge if you wish to conceal your necklace under a shirt. Although, if you prefer to leave your necklace exposed most of the time, a 20 inch necklace is a great length option.

18 to 20 inches is an ideal length for young men and teenagers. The range comfortably accommodates their smaller frame and neck size and falls at the collarbone or just below—a perfect spot for those who are still growing and can benefit from the versatility of these sizes.

A 22 inch necklace is the average men’s necklace length and considered the sweet spot for most men. Falling a few inches below the collarbone, this length allows for a bit more visibility and is ideal for showcasing pendants over t-shirts or under open shirts. It’s worth noting that a pendant will alter the overall length of your necklace, a detail worth considering when building your look

A 24 inch necklace lies just above the sternum which ensures larger pendants, like a cross necklace or a dog tag necklace, have enough space to stand out due to the added length.

30 to 36 inch necklaces hang at or just below the chest, offering a notable drop. Chains that fall within this length bracket are well-suited for accommodating larger, more intricate pendants.

Men aspiring to breach the 36 inch threshold with an even lengthier chain should consider a lariat necklace. This no-clasp design typically features decorative ends, which can be tied or looped in various ways to alter appearance and length. Rope chains can also exceed this length (but with a conventional loop structure) and, like lariats, present a multitude of styling possibilities.

A diverse collection of necklace lengths grants you flexibility in your fashion choices and the opportunity to add layers. It is inaccurate that you must commit to a single length; on the contrary, we say experiment away!

Choosing the Right Length for You

When determining a necklace length, consider your body type, neck size, and the types of outfits you plan to wear it with. Men with larger necks or broader builds may prefer longer lengths for comfort and proportion. If you’re taller, longer necklaces can help to proportionately distribute visual interest across your stature, avoiding an abrupt cut-off that might occur with shorter necklace lengths. Conversely, those of shorter stature may find that shorter necklaces help to elongate their neck and create a more balanced visual effect. The goal is to select a length that enhances your natural proportions.

Necklace Layering Tips and Styling Secrets

Successful necklace layering begins and ends with balance. This is essential to creating a look that feels both intentional and effortless. Consider the scale and proportion of the necklaces you wish to layer in relation to each other and to your body; no single piece should dominate to the point of overshadowing the others. Necklaces should be compatible with the wearer’s frame and outfit, and we’ll provide guidance on this in greater detail below.

To begin layering necklaces, we recommend choosing a statement necklace that your other pieces will accent. This can be a pendant, choker, or any other standout item that corresponds with your signature style.

Your subsequent necklace selections can complement the centerpiece in a variety of ways. One, they can add depth to your ensemble, which can be achieved by mixing necklace lengths. Begin at the top of your neckline with a shorter necklace, followed by one or two medium-length pieces, and finish with a longer necklace that falls below the others. These layers can also create dimension through a blend of texture and material—chains, gemstones, pearls, beads, and more. Overall, the intent of these layers is to enrich the composite without competing for attention.

Remember, necklace layering is a deeply personal process. To ensure you’re curating a collection that will stand the test of time, choose pieces that hold significance for you and try to steer clear of fleeting trends.

Your Layering FAQ’s Answered

Q: How do I layer necklaces that are the same length?

A: When done right, layering necklaces of the same length allows you a more focused look. We recommend utilizing spacers and choosing necklaces with different textures, materials, or pendant sizes to create variation, as altering length is not an option. Consider your neckline and the space you have to showcase the layers. Higher necklines may require more delicate and understated pieces to avoid overwhelming the look, while lower necklines might benefit from bolder designs that accentuate the exposed area.

Q: How do I layer my necklaces without tangling them?

A: A necklace by itself can easily become tangled, making the management of two or more seem impossible. But rest assured; it’s certainly less complicated than those knots! We recommend a storage option that prioritizes individual compartments or hooks to keep each necklace separate and tangle-free.

Layering Options for Every Neckline in Your Closet

V Neckline

Necklaces layered for a V neckline should follow the natural V shape of your neckline, guiding the eye down and complementing the cut of your top. Start with a shorter necklace that sits just above the collarbone, followed by one or two medium to long strands that echo the V’s angle.

Off-the-Shoulder Neckline

To style the spacious off-the-shoulder neckline, begin with a choker or a short necklace that closely hugs your neck to draw attention upward. Next, introduce mid-length strands that drape further down your chest. Choosing pieces that are light and dainty will maintain your neckline’s floating effect.

Square Neckline

Styling the clean lines and angles of a square neckline requires a thoughtful approach to balance the geometric cut. Opt for a choker or a shorter necklace to start that aligns closely with the upper edge of the square cut. Build on this with medium-length pieces that either mirror the square shape or introduce soft curves to contrast your neckline’s angularity.

Turtleneck Neckline

Given the high neckline, this look calls for an array of lengths to build depth. Begin with a slim, close-to-the-neck piece—perhaps a choker or a slender chain—for the first layer. Following this, add medium to long-length to contrast your turtleneck’s simplicity.

Crew Neckline

The relatively high and close-fitting design of the crew neckline necessitates a strategic contrast of necklace lengths, blending shorter, more snug pieces with longer, flowing chains. Start by selecting a short, delicate piece that sits just above your neckline, ensuring it doesn’t get lost against your top. Finish the ensemble with one or two longer chains or pendants that fall below your neckline.

Scoop Neckline

Most, if not all, necklaces follow the signature swoop of a scoop neckline, making it easy to style. Start with a fine, delicate chain that nestles just below your collarbone and then gradually add longer pieces, ensuring each one slightly overlaps the previous.

Collared Shirt Neckline

With the collar serving as a structured framework, a choker or a close-fitting necklace is the perfect starting layer for this neckline. Clasp on a mid-length pendant that falls just above the last closed button, allowing it to peek through just a little. If the setting permits, introduce a longer chain or pendant that drops below your collar to soften the formalities of your shirt.

Strapless Neckline

A strapless neckline introduces an additional element (the exposed shoulder region), offering more space to play with. We suggest a medium-length pendant that lies flat against the skin to draw attention to the center of your collarbone. Following this, frame your initial piece with shorter and longer necklaces.

Sweetheart Neckline

The success of layering a sweetheart neckline hinges on choosing pieces that echo its heart-shaped contours. Start with a delicate, shorter necklace that sits just at or above your neckline. Follow this with a slightly longer piece that can dangle over the fabric, ideally a pendant that matches your neckline’s curvature or adds a contrasting shape.

Halter Neckline

A halter neckline exhibits a unique shape that ties behind the neck, leaving less open space at the collarbone. Therefore, we recommend a choker or a short necklace that sits closely around your neck to highlight the halter’s high cut without interfering with its structure. If space and style allow, consider adding a longer, slender pendant that drops down the center, balancing the halter’s upward draw.
